ASAT
The American Studies Association of Turkey
Established in 1988
The American Studies Association of Turkey (ASAT) was established in 1988 to encourage the study of American culture and society in Turkey, and to promote academic alliances between Turkish and foreign scholars. To this end, ASAT organizes annual seminars, conferences, workshops and lectures; encourages Turkish scholars to conduct research in the United States; publishes the MLA-indexed Journal of American Studies of Turkey (JAST); and collaborates with the United States Embassy to bring top-notch American scholars to Turkey. Over the past twenty years, we have earned ourselves an international reputation for promoting excellence in the discipline of American Studies outside of the US, and have an extensive, worldwide, network of colleagues who participate regularly in our academic activities. Our membership includes university professors, graduate students, and other individuals with a serious interest in American Studies.

ASAT’s main event is its International American Studies Conference. Our 33rd Conference (2008), which was held at Bogazici University, was the largest conference to date, with over 80 paper presentations, participants from as far away as Japan and Brazil, and a wide-range of invited guest and speakers including Elif Şafak, Robert Stam (Distinguished Professor from New York University), African American quilter Nedra Bonds, and the Clifton Brown Dance Troupe. We invite you to visit the conference website for more details: http://www.asat2008.boun.edu.tr
Our 32nd Conference (2007) was held at Hacettepe University, and included numerous guests and speakers including Amy Kaplan (former President of the American Studies Association), the SNCC Freedom Singers, and the Native American Pueblo Artist Nora Noranjo-Morse:

Our next conference (Nov. 2010) will take place in Alanya, Turkey.
Membership is acquired through direct application to ASAT. All members enjoy the benefits derived from ASAT activities, and have the privilege of attending meetings and conferences either free, or at a reduced rate. The annual membership fee of 60TL also covers 2 issues of the Journal of American Studies of Turkey (JAST) per year, and membership privileges in the European Association for American Studies (EAAS) and the American Studies Association (ASA).
Today ASAT has over 70 active members, the majority of whom are faculty members at Turkish universities. Since 1996, ASAT has been an affiliate member of EAAS, and is represented at EAAS Board meetings by the national delegate, Doç. Dr. Meldan Tanrısal.
